Wabi-Sabi
Wabi and Sabi are two Japanese or Zen
concepts of beauty and aesthetics that are so
inter-related they are often thought of as one, "wabi-sabi". There is no simple definition of
these words since the concepts encompass
many different but interwoven ideas. At the
risk of over simplifying, wabi relates to
things that are fresh, new, and simple. Sabi
has to do with the beauty evoked by age,the
result of natural processes over time.
In art, wabi-sabi is often present in a sense of
rustic imperfection and an apparent simplicity
or effortlessness in execution. Asymmetry,
irregularity, incompleteness, modesty, humility,
and understatement are all typical
characteristics. There is a synthesis of the touch
of the artist and the natural processes of nature
that evokes wabi-sabi.
